The Paper Princess Project started as a charity comission for the popular on-line
childrens' story magazine - New Fairy Tales.I felt I could do more for this worthy cause, and expanded on the
Paper Princess character to create animations to help to publicise
the New Fairy Tales magazine. The original illustrations can be found here.
Final Animation
I added shadows to each frame using Photoshop, then added some crunching noises
to add a bit of depth to the animation.Scroll down for my blog of the project, updates, footage and photos
of me as I work.Traditionally Animating The Princess
Here is the first draft of the princesses movement, using traditional animation methods on a lightbox.

I used textured papers from photographs, stock and scanned paper to create the paper effect.January 26th
Today I got started on the stop motion part of the animation.
The original idea was to have the cut outs of the Paper Princess interacting
with the book along with the stop motion, so I printed all of her frames, then
ripped the edges to look as if she had pulled herself from the book.
Here is how the frames looked...

We then set up the camera and card - due to scheduling issues from my usual lecturer
my booked tutorial was with a lecturer I was unfamilliar with, so we were
unable to use some of my ideas. Also, you may notice a crowd in some of the
images - it was decided that my tutorial would become a lesson for the whole
class to learn stop motion, which made things a little more difficult.
Instead of the princess interacting with the book, we shot her flat on card.![]()

As an alternative to moving the princess around the book,
we took shots of her crumpling on the card.![]()
Finally, we filmed the stop motion of the book - it opening, lifting and
moving about the set. The Paper Princess will be added digitally.![]()
To finish for today, here is a very short animation of the book moving about:

Many audiobooks and cups of coffee later, here is the status of the
animation with the Paper Princess included.
The client also requested some changes to the font and text,
which are now correct in this version.
Next I will add some book and crumpling noises, to add depth to the
animation and make the princess seem more real.Home/Gallery/About Me/Webcomic/Commission/Awards
